Breast Cancer Awareness Month

The month of October is known as National Breast Cancer Awareness Month; NVIH stands by and supports this important cause. Breast cancer may touch your life regardless of who you are or where you live. Understanding the warning signs of breast cancer, your risk of breast cancer, and what’s normal for your body is vital so that you may take the necessary precautions. In 1989, Susan G. Komen started to help drive down mortality rates from breast cancer thanks to the focus on early detection and improvements in treatment. However, that progress may have been jeopardized during the COVID-19 pandemic as many people delayed their regular breast cancer screening. The past pandemic also disrupted treatment and research progress. More progress is still needed. Research and increased knowledge about breast cancer has led to new therapies and targeted treatments that improve outcomes for many people. Research brings hope to people with this disease and we must ensure more treatment options are available for all breast cancer patients, especially when treatments stop working. It is important to use your own discernment and listen to your body, if something doesn’t feel right, contact your primary care provider for an appointment. We are here to do our part and fight against this life changing disease. We invite our community to stand with us on 10/19 as our staff participate in the Pink Day movement to bring awareness to this life changing disease by wearing a pink shirt.
