Overview

WIC stands for Women, Infants, and Children. WIC, a federally funded program, provides nutrition education and supplemental food vouchers to participants receiving ongoing health care from cooperating clinics and doctors.

Protein, vitamins, and minerals are essential for health during and after pregnancy and for growth during childhood. Use of the foods provided by the WIC program will help ensure adequte nutrition.

Each participant receives approximately $60 worth of vouchers every month to buy milk, eggs, cheese, juices, cereal, and special infant formula. Helpful prenatal nutrition information in English or Spanish. Information to help parents/guardians provide good nutrition for their infants and children during their important years of growth. Individual dietary counseling. Food demonstrations to help utilize the WIC provided foods more effectively. Pamphlets, recipes, and other information are available in English and Spanish.

Each month eligible family members receive food vouchers. The name and prices of specific foods that can be purchased are printed on these vouchers. The vouchers can be exchanged at grocery stores in the area for the food items listed. (The vouchers cannot be exchanged for cash and they cannot be used for other foods.)

Pregnant women, women for 6 months after pregnancy if not nursing, mothers who are nursing an infant up to 12 months of age, and infants and children up their fifth birthday are eligible for WIC services.

For WIC at NVIH, those eligible must also be verified as Native Americans who live in the NVIH service area and, if non-Indian, be a patient of NVIH clinics and meet the financial and medical guidelines set by the State Department of Health.

There is no charge for the services provided by WIC. Participation in Welfare, AFDC, Food Stamps, or other programs are not affected.
